Report 24/01/06 Buner: The lakson Tobacco Company here in Swari depo was arranged one training workshop for tobacco grower on Monday where in about 150 growers from parts of the district participated. Mohammed Zagheem, leaf manager in his detail address informed that holding of such a training workshop with the aim to educate and inform the growers of the new developments in the sector that could be proved positive in yield to increase income of the growers for improving their living standard. He very frankly informed the growers that any question they had in their mind must be asked and all of the problems and difficulties being faced by them right from seed beds to quavering must be discussed to find better its solution. Company manger-Mohammed Wazir delivered detail speech how to save fire wood and quaver leaf while deputy manager-Zahirullah delivered speech on Foreign matters to enable the growers to increase per hectare yield with minimum expenditures and less labouring. The depo manager-Sher Ali Khan delivered detail speech that how a grower could keep himself safe during spray. The PTB assistant director Shakeel in brief informed about the best method of look after the seedbeds. Shamsher Bacha and Amanullah Khan represented the growers well when they informed the bosses that the growers were living miserable life as the expenditures they pay for growing tobacco were equal to the income and there was no profit unless the government provide them interest free loan and subsidy on pesticide and fertilizer. They explained that the per KG rate of the tobacco crop had not been raised as per the rate of fertilizer, pesticide, labour, plough, fire wood and transportation. They presented data that when fire wood per KG was sold out of 40 to 50 per KG tobacco rate was 50 to 55 while the fire wood rate increased to 150 the tobacco rate is was still 55 to 60. They termed the Pakistan tobacco board of not beneficial for the growers as it plays passive role and complained that the growers follow the directives and instructions given by the companies and the board in connection with raise in yield but the suggestions and opinion submitted by the growers are not recommended to the lawmakers by the board that according to them was lack of interest by the board.
